Magic mushrooms and drug tests

Updated over 8 months ago

So, you're on the fence about trying My Supply Co. Psilocybin (aka. magic mushroom) microdose and macrodose supplements. Your employer, unfortunately, requires routine drug tests. At this point it’s natural to wonder whether our Psilocybin supplements will show up on a routine drug test, so we put together this article to help you make an informed decision.

In this article, you will learn about different types of drug tests, and which may reveal your Psilocybin use to your employer.

Drug Testing and Magic Mushrooms

Psilocybin and psilocin, the primary psychoactive compounds in magic mushrooms, won’t show up on most routine drug tests; however, certain specialized tests might detect them.

Here's a look at some of the most common types of drug tests and their detection windows:

Urine Tests (Urinalysis)

Urinalysis is the most commonly used type of drug testing, especially when it comes to routine testing by employers.

Routine urine tests (e.g. 5-panel, 8-panel, or 10-panel tests) have a detection window of 24 to 48 hours. However, they do not typically screen for magic mushrooms. Instead, they primarily focus on substances like THC, cocaine, opioids, and amphetamines.

Specialized Tests

Although specialized tests exist to detect Psilocybin, they are rarely used due to their high costs. These tests are typically employed if there’s a strong suspicion of recent magic mushroom use.

Specialized tests, in order of shortest to longest detection windows, include:

  • HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography): A test focused on efficiency and speed, with a runtime of under 2 minutes for the analysis. HPLC is designed for rapid quantification and does not have a long-term detection window.

  • GC/MS (Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry): A highly sensitive test that can detect Psilocybin and Psilocin within hours after ingestion. The detection window is short-term, focusing on the presence of substances shortly after use.

  • UPLC (Ultra-High Pressure Liquid Chromatography): Detects Psilocybin and Psilocin for up to 90 days. More on that below.

Hair Tests

Hair tests like UPLC (Ultra-High Pressure Liquid Chromatography) can detect most substances ingested, including Psilocybin and Psilocin, within the last 90 days. That's because hair retains metabolites from these substances longer than blood, urine, or saliva.

However, hair tests for magic mushrooms are not common due to their high costs.

Blood and Saliva Tests

Magic mushrooms are metabolized too quickly to be detected by blood or saliva tests.

Psilocybin can be detected in blood tests for about 15 hours after the last dose. In saliva tests, Psilocybin may have a detection window of approximately 24 to 48 hours, similar to urine tests.

How Long Do Magic Mushrooms Stay in Your System?

Traces of magic mushrooms are unlikely to be detectable after 24 hours, but some research suggests a trace amount may persist for up to a week in certain individuals.

There are two considerations dictating how long Psilocybin and Psilocin stay in your system:

1. Absorption and Clearance

After ingestion, your gastrointestinal tract absorbs Psilocybin and converts it to Psilocin (the active form). Psilocin is typically cleared from your system within about 5 hours, while psilocybin takes up to 15 hours to clear.

2. Individual Factors

Your body's unique metabolic factors will affect clearance, including age, body size, overall health, and recent food or drink intake.

Can You Speed Up Elimination?

Unfortunately, there’s little that can be done to expedite the elimination of magic mushrooms from your system. Drinking water, filling your bladder, and peeing a few times before a test may help slightly, but it won’t significantly impact detection.

Remember that responsible use and informed decisions are crucial when it comes to magic mushrooms.

In summary, while magic mushrooms are unlikely to appear on routine drug tests, always stay informed. As with any substance, consult a healthcare professional or a knowledgeable professional for personalized advice.
